At this point, everything is public so a gag order doesn't matter. I'm actually shocked the WTS settled. I think they realized the CA Supreme Court was not likely to take the case.

'Conti' Court decision secures Watchtower's Policy of confidentiality

"the law generally protects the confidentiality of communications with clergy like those of kendrick to the elders here.".

"if the person has a constitutional right to independence in making religious choices, the recognition of an evidentiary privilege is an apt means of protecting that autonomy.

While it is legally addressing church policy, you have to balance that with the need to take steps to ensure the safety of unsuspecting church children (Conti in this case). No freedom is absolute. The Founding Fathers got sick of having to support the Church of England via taxes and official membership which is why we wrote that into our constitution to begin with (I'm American).

Interesting that the Court only addressed the issue of having a molester participate in church sponsored activities as it relates to protecting the congregation's children. I wonder if the WTS would have been found liable in a case where a molester working alone in service (and yes I've worked streets by myself so it happens) attacked a householder. After all, it's a church sponsored activity with complete direction (territory maps, direction on which streets to work in many cases by whoever is taking the group out). I wonder if this duty to supervise will extend to harm suffered from a non-church member?

If I were the WTS, I'd simply issue a BOE letter stating anyone found guilty of molestation by either a JC or a court of law, could not participate in the door to door work. I'm not sure I'd let them even run the trolly or do street work. You are talking a very small number of individuals that is exposing them to a significant legal liability. But then again, I wouldn't ever let someone like that serve in a position of oversight and we know they allow that as well. Really doesn't make any sense to me.

I have to say that the claims seem a bit cynical, but there are some very interesting connections. I recall when the Brooklyn sales were going down doing a little research on who purchased them and wondering if those folks (Reibling and his firm) had any JW ties. Interesting information and thanks for putting this together.

Honestly, I'm not sure I'd put anything past these guys.

done4good - They either have to make special arrangements for field service where an elder "in the know" is always taking the group out to ensure that the offender is not working with a minor, or prevent these guys from FS altogether. Either scenario is untenable to WT. Both expose the offender by default.

Totally agree. It seems to me that they could simply ban any offender from FS altogether without necessarily tipping off anyone. Lots of "inactive" folks out there so it wouldn't necessarily mean they were guilty of anything.

The problem as I see it is if the offender is currently a MS or elder. Then you WILL create a stir which could expose the offender. But, they are crazy from a legal standpoint from allowing someone who is a child abuser from having a position of authority in the congregation. Absolutely crazy. Take the right/wrong/moral issue off the table, just from a legal prospective this really exposes the Borg.

I simply can't for the life of me understand why they wouldn't take action against those folks. Those guys aren't very sharp.

If I were the WTS I would have appealed as well. The danger to them isn't necessarily the few millions they are going to pay out on this case, its the precedent that's been set and the future lawsuits they are concerned about. It will be interesting to see if the CA SC accepts the case. Seemed like the appellate courts ruling was pretty balanced.

When I was first waking up, I had a chance to go to London for work and had some free time. I recall going to the British Museum and spending a lot of time in the Babylon section as the evidence that Jerusalem was indeed destroyed in 587 sunk in. At that moment, it became clear to me that everything I trusted in terms of religion was wrong. I walked away mentally free from the JWs. Any doubts I had were gone, I knew it wasn't the truth.

Suggestions for Governing Body 2.0

i realize many people on here are very angry at the watchtower society and/or governing body for various reasons, many of which are likely justified, at least to some extent.

i also can totally understand the cynicism and pessimism i see from certain ones regarding the leaders of the society.. i think one thing that's often forgotten or overlooked, however, is the fact that members of the governing body who've been "in the truth" for 30, 40, 50, 60 years, probably truly believe in this organization.

in my opinion, it's more likely that they believe what they teach instead of being liars who are intentionally deceiving everyone.

You've completely rewritten the religion. There is simply no way they would make any of the changes you suggested because those are the things that the entire organization are built on. All of your suggestions center on reducing control but given their cult-like ways, control (and money) are really the only things they care about.

I wonder when they are going to cancel one Public Talk a month and substitute the broadcast? Say the first Sunday of every month have the broadcast instead of a local speaker. Who wants to take bets on when that starts? I'm down for 9-1-15
